Title:
On the connection between regression function and squared loss

Abstract:
Minimization of penalized risk functionals is a quite common
approach in statistical learning. Different loss functions have
been proposed in the literature and an open issue is understanding
the pros and cons of different choices.
However some choices seem more natural than others. This is the
case, for example, in the regression setting where one is quite
naturally led to search for the first moment of the output
conditioned to a given input, that is the regression
function.
It is well known that minimization of the averaged squared
loss is attained by the regression function. We show that squared loss
is the only convex loss fulfilling this property.
