*Title:* Explainable Clustering: Interpretable and Reliable
Learning

*Abstract: * We study the problem of explainable k-medians and k-means
clustering introduced by Dasgupta, Frost, Moshkovitz, and Rashtchian
(2020). In this problem, the goal is to construct a threshold decision tree
that partitions data into k clusters while minimizing the k-medians or
k-means objective. These trees are interpretable because each internal node
makes a simple decision by thresholding a single feature, allowing users to
trace and understand how each point is assigned to a cluster.

We develop new algorithms for this problem that achieve good approximation
and bi-criteria approximation to the optimal unconstrained clustering.
Finally, we discuss how to design machine learning algorithms that are more
interpretable and reliable.

*Research at TTIC Seminar Series*

TTIC is hosting a weekly seminar series presenting the research currently
underway at the Institute. Every week a different TTIC faculty member will
present their research. The lectures are intended for students seeking
research topics and advisors, and for the general TTIC and University of
Chicago communities interested in hearing what their colleagues are up to.
