Title: The Landscape of Data Subject Access and Portability Rights: Expectations, Corporate Implementations, and Novel Mechanisms For User Exploration.

Abstract: This proposal outlines the several ways I am tackling the issue of a consumer’s access to their personal data. As more and more companies from around the world implement mechanisms for users to request their data, it is crucial to first understand how to make these mechanisms usable and useful for promoting privacy. Therefore, I have run and plan on running several studies tackling this issue: from understanding consumers’ reactions to making requests, to surveying the current tools developed so far, and finally developing a custom tool. Central to all the studies I describe in this dissertation is the need for providing information in a way that makes consumers less overwhelmed, creating rich interactions between a user and their data, and streamlining and standardizing the mechanisms for consumers to make data subject access requests.
