Title: A highly smooth approach to non-smooth optimization

*Abstract:* Nesterov’s accelerated gradient descent has played a key role
at the heart of optimization theory. While typically such accelerated
methods are considered in the context of first-order convex optimization,
it turns out that there is a natural extension to methods based on
higher-order derivative information. Recently, there has been much
additional work on such higher-order accelerated methods that, under
appropriate smoothness conditions, nearly match known lower bounds. In this
talk, I will discuss these advances in higher-order acceleration, and I
will further present recent work showing how such methods can even lead to
faster rates for some non-smooth optimization problems.

*Research at TTIC Seminar Series*

TTIC is hosting a weekly seminar series presenting the research currently
underway at the Institute. Every week a different TTIC faculty member will
present their research. The lectures are intended both for students
seeking research topics and adviser, and for the general TTIC and
University of Chicago communities interested in hearing what their
colleagues are up to.

To receive announcements about the seminar series, please subscribe to the
mailing list: https://groups.google.com/a/ttic.edu/group/talks/subscribe

Speaker details can be found at: http://www.ttic.edu/tticseminar.php.
