*Title: *Educational data without tests or screens: extending
Montessori observation through technology

*Abstract: *A strong hypothesis in the education community is that more
(and more fine-grained) data about student development and educational
interactions would be helpful to teachers in making instructional
decisions. Many tools have been developed in pursuit of this goal, but the
vast majority of them require assessments, screen-based computerized
learning experiences, etc. In this talk, we will describe an active R&D
effort aimed at gathering meaningful and actionable data for teachers
without tests or screens, allowing the students to engage in authentic
educational and social interactions. The prototype uses embedded sensors
and layers of machine learning to extract educational inferences from a
tactile, multi-sensory Montessori environment. We describe the current
state of our research and sketch future directions.

*Bio:* Theodore Quinn leads research and innovation for Wildflower Schools,
an emerging nationwide network of independent, teacher-led,
community-embedded, intentionally diverse Montessori micro-schools that
support children, teachers, and parents. Before Wildflower, he spent nearly
a decade as the Senior Vice President of Organizational Learning at Teach
For America, where he led a wide range of research, innovation, data, and
knowledge management activities. Prior to entering the education space, he
was an Associate Principal with McKinsey & Co., where he advised clients on
strategy and performance issues. He holds a Ph.D. in physics from the
University of Chicago and a B.S. in physics from Stanford University.
