Title:       Discovering Rich Representations of
          Visual Categories from Human Annotations

Abstract:

I'll describe two of my current projects that are centered on collecting
annotations to build models for detailed recognition of visual categories.
The first is about discovering semantic parts for architectural objects
with the goal of parsing images of these into components such as windows
and arches. The other aims to discover attributes of visual categories from
natural language descriptions of images. Collecting annotations for these
tasks via "crowd-sourcing" is challenging -- traditional methods for part
annotations require the names and semantics of the parts be known ahead of
time, methods of collecting descriptions tend to produce rather poor
results since the task is ill-posed. To overcome these drawbacks we propose
novel annotation tasks and use these to discover rich structure of parts
and attributes within the category using computer vision and natural
language processing techniques.
