Title: Discriminative Metric Learning with Latent Structured Prediction

Abstract:

I will talk about a recent, and ongoing, work on metric learning for k
nearest neighbor classification. We formulate the problem as a large margin
structured prediction problem,
with a latent variable representing the choice of neighbors and the
task loss directly corresponding to classification error. We
describe an efficient algorithm for exact loss augmented inference, and a
fast
subgradient-descent algorithm for learning in this model. This is a
more direct approach to discriminative metric learning than those
previously proposed, and in
experiments on a variety of data sets our method is shown to achieve
excellent results compared to current state of the art in metric learning.

This is joint work with Shubhendu Trivedi and David McAllester.

Research at TTIC Seminar Series

TTIC is hosting a weekly seminar series presenting the research currently
underway at the Institute. Every week a different TTIC faculty member will
present their research. The lectures are intended both for students
seeking research topics and adviser, and for the general TTIC and
University of Chicago communities interested in hearing what their
colleagues are up to.

To receive announcements about the seminar series, please subscribe to the
mailing list: https://groups.google.com/a/ttic.edu/group/talks/subscribe

Speaker details can be found at: http://www.ttic.edu/tticseminar.php.

For additional questions, please contact Nati Srebro at nati at ttic.edu.
