Paradigms of evaluation in natural language processing
Abstract: Natural language processing has evolved a dominant paradigm
of evaluation in which the standard approach involves calculating
single metrics or related metrics calculated based on performance on
naturally occurring bodies of data. However, traditional structural
linguistics suggests another paradigm for evaluation, based on
approaching language processing tools as languages and evaluating tool
performance on structured bodies of data, including synthetic data.
We will examine ways to implement this paradigm and show how it can
reveal useful patterns in the performance of systems for biomedical
language processing.
