*Title*:             How Should We Tokenize Visual Data?


*Abstract:*   I'll discuss some existing approaches to representing images
and videos as sets of vectors. Such "tokenization" mechanisms are at the
core of all modern methods for visual understanding and synthesis
(generation). Methods for tokenization that are widely used today are
heavily inspired by approaches that proved successful for text. But I argue
that there are significant differences between the domain of text and that
of visual data, and describe some early work in my group related to this
topic, as well as some more speculative directions we are thinking about.
