Hello all,

It looks like the best slot for this quarter's theory lunch is the same as last quarter's, namely 12:30-1:30pm in JCL 390. With that in mind, we look forward to seeing you next week, when inaugural speaker Tushant Mittal will be kicking off our spring quarter!

Date: April 6th, Wednesday
Time: 12:30pm CT
Location: JCL 390

Speaker: Tushant Mittal

Title: NoPe- Not so easily

Abstract: "What's the big deal about proving something is in NP? Just guess and check." Or so thinks the insouciant young complexity theorist. Surely, there are problems that do not admit efficient NP certificates but it is tricky to come up with natural problems which we believe must be in NP but the proof is non-trivial. We discuss a quick proof that one very natural problem is in NP (which actually is in P). We then look at a larger family of examples and depending on the time, mention new results/open problems.

COVID Policy: As per university policy, masking is not currently required for in-person attendance. Please note that we will have fully masked and social-distanced tables available to accommodate any attendees who would prefer such arrangements. Please contact us if you have any questions or feedback.
