Title: Utilizing the Materiality of Receipts to Improve Screen-time Reflection

Abstract: Many algorithm-driven platforms are designed to capture attention in ways that often conflict with users' original intentions. In this talk, I present Attention Receipts, a speculative system that disrupts this persuasive dynamic by making media consumption more visible, tangible, and accountable. Through a mid-century modern receipt printer that sits in the home, we explore how material artifacts can prompt users to reflect on their screen-time and reconsider their viewing habits.
Based on a three-week field deployment with six participants, I will share how the act of printing and encountering physical receipts shifted patterns of engagement and shaped participants’ sense of agency. Building on these findings, I will open up a broader discussion on how the physical environments we occupy might be designed to support digital well-being. What kinds of interventions can help make persuasive technologies more accountable to the spaces and lives they inhabit?
