Mind Bytes is an in-person celebration of scholarship and research computing. It is a unique event that brings together faculty, staff, and students from every corner of the University who share an interest in high-end computing, data, scientific visualization, and the use of computation and data to advance what is considered state-of-the-art in their fields. The theme for discussion for this year's event is Computing, Data, and Beyond: Impact on Our World.

Keynote Speaker: Jack Dongarra
[Jack Dongarra]

In this talk, Jack Dongarra, winner of the 2021 ACM A.M. Turing Award, will examine how high-performance computing has changed over the last ten years and look toward the future in terms of trends. These changes have had and will continue to impact our numerical scientific software significantly. A new generation of software libraries and algorithms is needed for the effective and reliable use of (wide area) dynamic, distributed, and parallel environments. Some of the software and algorithm challenges have already been encountered, such as the management of communication and memory hierarchies through a combination of compile-time and run-time techniques, but the increased scale of computation, depth of memory hierarchies, range of latencies, and increased run-time environment variability will make these problems much harder.

Generative AI Discussion:
Addie Cooke, Google and Jessica Yeats, NVIDIA
[Addie Cooke]
[Jessica Yeats]

AI has grown exponentially and now has a presence and uses in many fields and disciplines. Recent advances of Generative AI raise questions about how Generative AI should be used, policy, ethics, future opportunities, and challenges. Addie Cooke (Cloud AI Public Policy Lead at Google) and Jessica Yeats (Principal Data Scientist, Autonomous Vehicles at NVIDIA) will share their unique perspectives from their expertise on these and other important topics.
