Dear all,

I am pleased to announce that the Center for Data and Computing (CDAC) has
welcomed four scholars into its inaugural class
<https://cdac.uchicago.edu/fellows-and-scholars/> of Data Science and
Applied AI Postdoctoral Scholars this year: James Saxon, Tarun Mangla,
Ningzi Li, and Dylan Fitzpatrick.

*James Saxon* comes to CDAC as an already established researcher at the
University of Chicago, having worked previously with the Harris School of
Public Policy, Center for Spatial Data Science, and the Enrico Fermi
Institute. James' research uses large data sources to measure the
availability and use of civic and social resources in American cities. One
such research project he is working on at CDAC aims to elucidate how the
mobility of different neighborhoods in Chicago responded to the COVID-19
pandemic.

*Tarun Mangla* joins CDAC having recently completed his PhD in Computer
Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where his thesis focused on
the performance of video applications for end users. He will continue work
on networks and the Internet at CDAC, exploring the “digital divide”, or
the widespread inequality of access to reliable, high-speed Internet in the
United States. Similar research interests include smart cities and
interdisciplinary collaborations around IoT-related research.

*Dylan Fitzpatrick* returns to UChicago jointly as a postdoctoral scholar
with CDAC and as Research Director at the UChicago Urban Labs’ Crime Lab
<https://urbanlabs.uchicago.edu/labs/crime>, having previously participated
in the 2014 Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) summer fellowship. His
research will focus on creation and deployment of predictive models for
improving educational outcomes and reducing crimes. Dylan recently
completed a PhD in Machine Learning and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon
University.

*Ningzi Li *will join CDAC as a postdoctoral scholar in Winter 2021. She
received her doctoral degree in Sociology at Cornell University. Her
research focuses on organizational theory and sociology of strategy, in
particular, how social and institutional factors shape firm strategies. One
stream of her work investigates causes and consequences of
inter-organizational networks over the course of institutional changes
using big data approach. A second stream of her work examines language as
an essential component and representation of strategy using natural
experiments and NLP methods. She is a recipient of the best paper award
from Canadian Sociological Association Economic Sociology Research Cluster,
2019.

Please join me in welcoming James, Tarun, Ningzi, and Dylan to their new
roles! Feel free to reach out to our scholars to learn more about their
research or to grab a virtual coffee, emails are above.

Best,

Julia
