Title: First moment obstructions
Abstract: First moment obstructions are certificates via simple union bounds of the inexistence of target structures in a random system. In recent years, first-moment obstructions have been proven to be the main driving force across multiple fundamental phenomena in probability and combinatorics. I will highlight new perspectives on first moment obstructions as a measure of complexity of a collection of structures. As a demonstration, I will describe an essentially complete resolution of a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris and Samotij in additive combinatorics on sharp enumeration of sets with small doubling.
Bio: Huy Pham is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Rosenberg Scholar in the Department of Mathematics at Caltech. He previously obtained my PhD from Stanford University, where he was very fortunate to be advised by Professor Jacob Fox. He got his BS in Mathematics and MS in Statistics with Honors and Distinction from Stanford University, and a Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics with Distinction from the University of Cambridge.
