*When:* Monday, February 1, 2021 at *11:10 am CT*

*Where:* Zoom Virtual Talk (*register in advance here
<https://uchicagogroup.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_M7BWL9wvQnGQdO_dS9i7Wg>*)

*Who: * Emily Denton, Google

*Title:* Rethinking Machine Learning Data

*Abstract:* Machine learning datasets have recently been a focus of great
scrutiny as a myriad of AI failures have been traced back to concerns with
the underlying data. In this talk, I will examine the current norms and
patterns of valuation that are operative in the development and use of
datasets within machine learning. Examining challenges to machine learning
datasets and data practices that have come from machine learning
practitioners, criticall tech scholars, affected communities, and more, I
will motivate the necessity of reorienting the fields relationship to data
and present a set of recommendations that could shift the field towards
more equitable, rigorous, and accountable dataset development and use.

*Bio:* Emily Denton is a Research Scientist on Google’s Ethical AI team,
studying the societal impacts of machine learning and AI technology. Their
recent research centers on critically examining the norms, values, and work
practices that structure the development and use of machine learning
datasets. Prior to joining Google, Emily received their PhD in machine
learning from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York
University, focusing on unsupervised learning and generative modeling of
images and video.

*Host: **D.J. Sutherland* <danica at ttic.edu>
