*Title:*             Algorithm Design in the Machine Learning Era


*Abstract:    *I will discuss two directions in the design of algorithms:
"learning-based algorithms" and "fairness in algorithms".

First, I will describe the framework of “learning-based” algorithms. This
framework is inspired by the success of machine learning approaches and has
the following promise: when the input has "learnable" patterns, the
algorithm beats the performance of classical algorithms; otherwise, it
provides almost the same worst-case guarantees as the best existing
classical algorithms.

In the second part of my talk, I will overview my research on algorithmic
fairness. In particular, I will discuss recent developments and interesting
open questions in the study of fair clustering.
