*When:* Friday, January 15th at 10:20am (please note that all times are
in Central Standard Time); The room is open beginning at 10:00am and we
encourage everyone to join early to mingle!

*Where:* Zoom Virtual Talk (see details below)

*Who: * Mina Karzand, TTIC

*Title: * Online Learning of Structured Matrices

*Abstract: *We consider an online model for recommendation systems, with
each user being recommended an item at each time-step and providing 'like'
or 'dislike' feedback. A latent variable model specifies the user
preferences: both users and items are clustered into types. The model
captures structure in both the item and user spaces, and our focus is on
the simultaneous use of both structures. We analyze the situation in which
the type preference matrix has i.i.d. entries. Our analysis elucidates the
system operating regimes in which existing algorithms are nearly optimal,
as well as highlighting the sub-optimality of using only one of item or
user structure (as is done in commonly used item-item and user-user
collaborative filtering). This prompts a new algorithm that is optimal in
essentially all parameter regimes.

Towards the end of the talk, I will talk about directions for future work/
open problems and raise a number of questions that I am interested in
collaborating on with the members of the community.

*Research at TTIC Seminar Series*

TTIC is hosting a weekly seminar series presenting the research currently
underway at the Institute. Every week a different TTIC faculty member will
present their research. The lectures are intended both for students
seeking research topics and adviser, and for the general TTIC and
University of Chicago communities interested in hearing what their
colleagues are up to.

To receive announcements about the seminar series, please subscribe to the
mailing list: https://groups.google.com/a/ttic.edu/group/talks/subscribe

Speaker details can be found at: http://www.ttic.edu/tticseminar.php.
