M.S. Paper Title: Unsupervised Vocabulary Expansion with Hierarchical
Signature Structure

Abstract:
Out of Vocabulary (OOV) words have been a notable and difficult
problem for natural language processing systems. For languages with
rich resources, more data could mitigate the problem. However, the
problem is even more difficult when it comes to low-resourced
languages. To address the problem, we propose to expand vocabulary
based on morphological signatures learned. Specifically, we propose a
hierarchical structure to model the evolution of morphological
signatures and make the inference on potential words based on the
structure. Moreover, a post-processing re-ranking phase is implemented
to further refine the results. In addition to English, our work is
tested on numerous low-resourced languages, including Zulu, Tagalog
and Swahili. Comprehensive experiments show that our model
consistently outperforms existing models across all languages. Our
model achieves a precision of up to 37.2\%. Additionally, further
experiments visualize the performance improvement from re-ranking
process. We also analyze the distribution of valid candidates, and
provide in-depth error analysis.
