*Title: * Fault-tolerant federated and distributed learning
*Abstract:*
Machine learning models are routinely trained and deployed among devices
that are susceptible to hardware/software/communication errors and/or
security concerns. Examples range from geo-distributed datacenters to
groups of mobile/IoT devices. For such settings, distributed training is
typically achieved via interleaved aggregation. I will present and analyze
aggregation schemes for federated learning and distributed training via
stochastic gradient descent. The proposed aggregation schemes are shown to
be robust to worst-case errors from a large fraction of arbitrarily
malicious workers (aka Byzantine errors). Empirical evaluation in a variety
of real-world settings further illustrates the performance of the proposed
aggregation strategies.
