*Title:*         Getting Computers to Understand Descriptions of Everyday
Events

*Abstract:* Much of the research in my group has been focused on trying to
get computers to understand language that describes everyday scenes and
events. In this talk, I will give an overview of this work, ranging from
image description and text-to-image grounding to semantic inference, and I
will discuss the challenges involved in getting computers to perform these
seemingly simple tasks.

*Bio:* Julia Hockenmaier is an associate professor of computer science at
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has won an NSF CAREER
award and the IJCAI-JAIR Best Paper Prize 2018, which is awarded to an
outstanding paper published in JAIR in the preceding five calendar years.
She serves currently as the chair of the NAACL board and as one of the
program chairs for EMNLP 2018.
