> D. Fox Harrell is Professor of Digital Media & Artificial Intelligence in both the Comparative Media Studies Program and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT. He founded and directs MIT’s Imagination, Computation, and Expression Laboratory (ICE Lab), and his research explores the relationship between imaginative cognition and computation. Harrell is concerned with how our social identities are complicated by their intersection with computing technologies including videogames, virtual worlds, social media, and related digital media forms. With an emphasis on equity, Professor Harrell’s talk will explore how virtual identities both implement and transform persistent issues of class, gender, sex, race, ethnicity, and the dynamic construction of social categories more generally. He aims to push the boundaries of how computers can be used for creative expression and social empowerment.
