Title: Micro-Randomized Trials and Time-Varying Treatment Effects with Applications to Mobile Health

Abstract: A critical question in the development of mobile health interventions is, when and in which contexts, is it most useful to deliver treatments to the user. This question concerns time-varying dynamic moderation by the context on the effectiveness of in-the-moment interventions on user behavior. In this talk we discuss the micro-randomized trial design and associated data analyses for use in assessing moderation. We illustrate this approach with data from a micro-randomized mobile health trial: HeartSteps.

Bio: Dr. Murphy's current primary interest is in causal inference and multi-stage decisions, sometimes called dynamic treatment regimes. Dynamic treatment regimes are individually tailored treatments involving a sequence of decision rules that specify when to alter therapy. The decision rules employ variables such as patient response, risk, burden, adherence, and preference, collected during prior therapy.
