Title: Machine Learning and Immunology

Abstract:
Advances in computer science and the explosion of large-scale, quantitative
experiments have created a data-driven revolution in biology. However, the
lack of computational algorithms to effectively analyze complex large-scale
data remains a critical roadblock in the field of immunology. My talk
focuses on reverse engineering the genetic, molecular and regulatory
mechanisms underlying immune function. First, I will introduce a max-margin
based method to model and predict microRNA gene-target interactions in T
cells. Second, I will introduce new methods to reconstruct and predict B
cell fate mapping at the single-cell level. Third, I will conclude my talk
by introducing a few open computational problems in cancer immunology and
their implications towards improving human health. The talk will aim to
contain the necessary background needed to understand the machine learning
and immunology topics presented.

Bio:
Aly Khan is a Research Assistant Professor at the Toyota Technological
Institute at Chicago, an academic computer science institute located on the
campus of the University of Chicago. His research focuses on developing
novel computational methods to study the molecular and cellular systems
that control immune function. He obtained his PhD in Computational Biology
jointly from Cornell University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center,
and received his MS in Computational Biology from Carnegie Mellon
University. In addition to his academic research, he has worked on applied
math and computational biology research at Merck and Genentech.

*Research at TTIC Seminar Series*

TTIC is hosting a weekly seminar series presenting the research currently
underway at the Institute. Every week a different TTIC faculty member will
present their research. The lectures are intended both for students
seeking research topics and adviser, and for the general TTIC and
University of Chicago communities interested in hearing what their
colleagues are up to.

To receive announcements about the seminar series, please subscribe to the
mailing list: https://groups.google.com/a/ttic.edu/group/talks/subscribe

Speaker details can be found at: http://www.ttic.edu/tticseminar.php.
