M.S. Paper Title: TTFLASH: ELIMINATING GC INDUCED TAIL LATENCY IN SSD
Abstract:
In this paper, we present ttFlash. ttFlash is a next-generation
tiny-tail flash drive (SSD) which can almost entirely eliminate
GC-induced tail latencies. We achieve this by leveraging three modern
SSD technological advancements including the more powerful flash
controller, the prevalence of Redundant Array of Independent NANDs
(RAIN), and the common use of capacitor-backed RAM write buffer. On
top of these technologies, we build four new novel strategies inside
SSD: plane-blocking GC, GC-tolerant read, rotating GC, and GC-tolerant
write. Through an extensive evaluation, we show that I/O latencies in
ttFlash are very close to a perfect no-GC scenario. Specifically, at
99-99.99th percentile, ttFlash slowdowns are only 1.0 to 1.26x
compared to a no-GC scenario, orders of magnitude faster than typical
SSDs.
