MS Paper Title:  SWARM: Distributed Power Budgeting

Abstract:
As power becomes an increasingly important concern in large scale datacenters there has been a corresponding rise in the need for power management software. Unfortunately, all current systems rely on a centralized manager which creates a single point of failure. To address this problem we present SWARM, a fully distributed power manager to optimize throughput given a power budget. We tested SWARM on a datacenter simulator against a naive static strategy and an oracle strategy using data derived from a real world workload. These simulations show that SWARM has an average throughput that is 14% higher than the naive policy and performs within 3% of the oracle strategy. Additionally, we show that SWARM is able to recover from failures at any machine resulting in final throughput that can be up to twice that of other strategies.
