MS Paper Title:  Vortex Core Visualization with Curved Reformatting and Projection

Abstract:
Imaging technology has revolutionized data collection in science, with scanners and high-speed
cameras creating new kinds of image data in a variety of domains. Existing image analysis
algorithms developed in established domains, like medical imaging, can be applied to new
modalities, but the accuracy of the results must be assessed as part of the scientific process.
Our work has created a tool that uses ridge line extraction and volume rendering methods
to visualize image data from an experimental fluid dynamics investigation of vortex cores.
The experiment produces a temporal sequence of three-dimensional images, within which a
vortex core changes in shape and position. The image analysis seeks to extract and quantify
the vortex dynamics. Around an initial model of the vortex core geometry, the image data
can be reformatted (or resampled) into a long thin straight volume in which the vortex core
should appear along the center line. Repeating this for each timestep permits visualizing how
closely the calculated vortex core matches the intensity variations in the volume data itself.
Dimensionally reducing the straight volume to a line further enables visualizing characteristics
of the vortex core dynamics in a two-dimensional image parameterized by vortex core arc-length
and time.
