Title:       Enriched Unsupervised Natural Language Processing with
Cost-Augmented
              Contrastive Estimation

Abstract:

We generalize contrastive estimation---a technique for discriminative
unsupervised learning---in two ways that allow us to add more knowledge to
unsupervised learning. Contrastive estimation uses a corruption function on
observations to generate negative examples during training.  Our first
modification lets the modeler specify not only the set of corrupted inputs,
but also how bad each one is.  The second allows specifying structural
preferences on the latent variable used to explain the observations. These
require setting additional hyperparameters, which can be problematic in
unsupervised learning, so we investigate new methods for unsupervised model
selection. We instantiate these ideas for unsupervised part-of-speech
tagging, improving over contrastive estimation as well as the strongest
systems from the PASCAL 2012 shared task.
