Title:       Multi-view learning of speech representations for improved
recognition

Abstract:

Speech recognition can be improved if additional measurements besides
acoustics, such as video or vocal tract measurements, are available.
 However,  only relatively small amounts of speech data with such
additional measurements have been collected, and it is usually not
practical to record multiple modalities at test time.  Can we take
advantage of the small amounts of existing multi-modal speech data to learn
something useful about the acoustic speech signal?

This talk will cover recent work exploring this question, with the theme of
using multi-view learning ideas to derive improved representations of the
speech signal.  The techniques are based on canonical correlation analysis
and its nonlinear extensions, including our recently introduced extension
using deep neural networks.  We show that using vocal tract measurements as
an additional view, we can indeed learn speech representations that improve
upon standard ones for speech recognition.
