Title: Computational Methods for Rational Drug Design

Abstract:

Developing a new drug can take between 18-25 years and cost up to 1.8
billion dollars. In spite of the gradual increase in the amount of money
spent on discovering new drugs to counter the growing number of
untreatable/incurable diseases, only 20-25 new drugs make it to the market
every year. In my talk, I will present computational methodologies to (i)
characterize the biophysical properties of new drug-targets (ii) predict
the 3D structures of new drug-targets and (iii) predict novel targets for
existing drugs. Beta-barrel membranes proteins are potential antibiotic
targets. I will present a novel computational method to predict the
thermodynamic properties and 3D structures of beta-barrel membrane proteins
using an empirical potential function that is derived from combinatorial
analysis of their structures. I will also present a novel computational
method to construct the structural binding signature of a given drug by
using sequence independent structure alignment, hierarchical clustering and
stochastic sequence similarity. This structural binding signature can then
be used to identify new drug targets for the given drug. These
methodologies will reduce the time and lower the costs for the drug
discovery process significantly.

Bio

Hammad Naveed received his PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago
in the area of Computational Biology. Dr. Naveed has been awarded several
scholarships/awards during his academic career including the Chinese
Academy of Science Young International Fellow (2012-13) and the Fulbright
Scholarship (2007-12). He has 17 research papers published in International
Journal and Conferences with a combined impact factor of more than 60.
