Title:      Cascade systems for image segmentation

In this talk I will describe some of our recent work on learning systems
for image segmentation, that is, for automatic partition of the image into
meaningful regions. A common theme for much of this work is the idea of a
cascade: A sequence of decision-making stages, each trained to improve the
quality of the solutions obtained by the previous stage. I will focus on
two projects that rely, in different ways, on this basic idea. In one
project we re-rank multiple semantic image segmentations obtained from a
random field model (a very short cascade). The second project is on
building a much longer cascade, with tens of stages, for agglomerative
bottom-up merging of image regions. In both of these projects we can report
excellent results on benchmark data sets. This is joint work with Payman
Yadollahpour, Zhile Ren and Dhruv Batra.
