Impact of Conceptual Data Modeling on Data Warehousing 

Abstract: 
Multiple domain data integration from disparate sources for comprehensive information delivery is a perpetual challenge in biomedical informatics. In response to this challenge, many academic institutions have adopted or developed data warehouse systems to aggregate individualized (person-based) biomedical data. Although a commonly used regime with similar application purposes, current data warehousing systems are built with highly divergent data models and data supply workflows. Consequently, these warehouses may form another layer of incubating silos for heterogeneous data. While implementation-independent, conceptual data modeling is required to deliver a logical model, as a foundation for warehouse schema implementation and as a unified data view for data integration. It addition, a well-annotated conceptual model can also serve as a template for data clarity and consistency discussion among information researchers and data consumers, to reach certain level of consensus. 
In this talk, I use a fully materialized example to describe the impact of conceptual data modeling on development and application of a data warehousing system.
