Addressing data challenges of large-scale simulations on leadership-class systems

Abstract:
The performance mismatch between computing and I/O components of current-generation HPC systems has made I/O a bottleneck for scientific applications. It is therefore critical to make data movement as efficient as possible, and, to facilitate simulation-time data analysis and visualization to reduce the data volume written to storage. Enabling these will be of paramount importance to glean insights from simulations.

In this talk, we will elucidate the analytics and I/O challenges faced by applications at extreme-scale and present various promising approaches. Next, we will give an overview our work in GLEAN - A flexible framework for data-analysis and I/O at extreme scale which leverages data semantics of applications and fully exploits the diverse system topologies and characteristics. We will discuss the performance of GLEAN for simulation-time analysis and I/O with DOE INCITE and ESP simulations at scale on leadership class systems.

Bio:
Venkatram Vishwanath is an assistant computer scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. His interests are in the areas of large-scale scientific data analysis and visualization, scalable data movement and I/O middleware, hardware architectures, and collaboration systems. He is currently working on scalable solutions to enable scientists to glean insights from their large scientific datasets. His work has lead to publications in ACM/IEEE Supercomputing, IEEE Cluster Computing, IEEE Visualization, among others.

Information: Lunch will be provided
