Globus Provision: A Tool for Deploying Globus Systems on Amazon EC2

Abstract:
Globus Provision (http://globus.org/provision) is a recently released tool for deploying fully-configured Globus systems on Amazon EC2. It is designed to be simple to use, allowing users to deploy common Globus and Globus-friendly services (GridFTP, GRAM, Condor, etc.) in just minutes. Globus Provision also takes care of generating user accounts, user/host certificates, setting up NFS/NIS, etc. and can dynamically add and remove software, hosts, and user accounts to a running system.

The latest version of Globus Provision (0.3.1) also includes support for Globus Online, allowing users to create a Globus Online transfer endpoint on EC2 (backed by ephemeral storage or EBS volumes), without having to worry about setting up a GridFTP server, requesting certificates, etc. This endpoint can be deployed in combination with a compute cluster, such as Condor or Hadoop, enabling users to quickly set up an environment on which to experiment with their data.

In this talk, I will provide an introduction to Globus Provision, its features, and what we're using it for. The talk will also include a demo of Globus Provision, and a discussion of upcoming features.

BIO:
Borja Sotomayor is a Researcher at the CI, where he works mainly in the Globus Online team. His research deals with virtual machine-based resource provisioning models, and he is involved with various free and open source software projects in that line, such as Globus Provision, a tool for deploying grid and HPC systems on Amazon EC2, and OpenNebula, a virtual infrastructure manager. Borja earned his PhD from the University of Chicago in 2010, and joined the CI that same year. He is also a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, where he teaches various systems courses, including Networks and Distributed Systems.
