Title:      Learning Similarity Sensitive Embeddings

Abstract:

The notion of similarity is ubiquitous in applications of computation.
Sometimes is is implicit, as in nearest-neighbor based classification,
and sometimes explicit, as in some information retrieval scenarios.
Often this notion is taken for granted and represented by computing a
generic distance function. However, in many cases it is beneficial to
learn what it means for two instances to be similar in the context of
a given task. This leads to the problem of supervised learning of
similarity functions from examples of similar and dissimilar
instances. I will review recent work in this area, and describe a new
method for similarity learning (joint work with Dhruv Batra). Our
method constructs an embedding of the data with the objective to make
a natural distance in the embedding space a good proxy for the
underlying similarity.
