Leveraging Service Oriented Computing to Facilitate the Sharing of
Services-Based Scientific Capabilities

Abstract
It has become increasingly common that scientists in various
laboratories are developing highly specialized techniques to gather
and analyze experimental data. The recently emerged Service Oriented
Computing technology allows independent capabilities to be codified
into modular software applications, accessible over the network: what
are often called services. To integrate their findings, like-minded
communities of scientists naturally begin to combine their services
into higher-level workflows. However, although tools continue to
improve, the sharing of service-based capabilities remains a
significant challenge. This talk discusses our efforts of developing
methods and tools in three aspects: semantic-aware services discovery,
historical usage data-based services discovery & semi-automatic
workflow composition, and data management supporting collaborative
workflow composition.

Bio:
Dr. Jia Zhang is currently an Associate Professor of the Department of
Computer Science at Northern Illinois University. Her research
interest centers on service oriented computing, with a focus on
collaborative scientific workflows, service-oriented architecture,
semantic services, and cloud computing. Dr. Zhang has published over
100 refereed journal papers, book chapters, and conference papers. She
also co-authored the textbook “Services Computing.” Dr. Zhang is now
an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing (TSC)
and of International Journal of Web Services Research (JWSR), and
serves as Program Vice Chair of the IEEE International Conference on
Web Services (ICWS) and Program Chair of 2011 IEEE Asia-Pacific
Services Computing Conference (APSCC).
