Title: An Algorithmic View of Computer Vision
Abstract:
It has been forty years since the first attempts to build computers
that see. In certain settings such as industrial inspection and
character recognition, computers now not only see, they often do so
more reliably than humans. Despite such successes, however, research in
computer vision has focused more on problem formulations than on
algorithmic questions. As a result, many computer vision techniques are
not able to compete with ad hoc approaches in practice. Recently there
has been increased focus on algorithmic issues in computer vision,
particularly drawing on graph algorithms and geometric techniques. This
talk will present some recent algorithmic advances and argue that such
advances are key to further progress in the field
