Title: Reviewing past and current problems of signal processing for hard disk
drivein terms of CS basic theories

Abstract: In this presentation, I would like to mainly describe a relation
between fundamental theories born in CS and real applications for magnetic
recording disk. As you know, increase of areal recording density of HDD always
requires an evolution of read/write channel signal processing because the
performance of reproducing signals are deteriorated very severely both in
frequency characteristics and in signal to noise ratio. Intersymbol
interference due to the deterioration of frequency characteristics has been
suppressed using dynamic programming (Viterbi algorithm). Random errors due to
low signal to noise ratio will be compensated with application of Baum-Welch
algorithm (BCJR algorithm) and probabilistic reasoning ( LDPC).Current problem
is the occurrence of pattern dependent noise due to magnetic media
fluctuation. I will try to apply the idea of support vector machine to data
discrimination in order to reduce errors caused by pattern dependent noise.
