Title: Computing the Homology of a Submanifold from Sampling Points

Speaker: Steve Smale (Toyota Tech. Inst., Univ. of Chicago)

Abstract: The starting point of this module is a result proved recently with
Partha Niyogi and Shmuel Weinberger, that by choosing a finite number of points
at random from a compact submanifold M of Euclidean space, one can determine
exactly its homology with high probability. One is able to estimate the number
of points needed in terms of an invariant we call the condition number of the
submanifold. A motivation of this study is the analysis of rich data.
