Title: Real-time Sound Propagation Modeling: Rubbing, Sliding
and Scratching the Surface of Marimbas, Indian Drums and Wine Glasses
Abstract:
I will present a sound synthesis method which simulates the physics of
sounding objects in real-time and allows for complex immediate
interactions. Models of this type have previously been limited to systems
which can be closely described by the one-dimensional wave equation or
which would only allow for a restricted set of excitations to be modeled. I
will describe how insisting on a propagational view allows us to derive
models for a much larger class of sounding objects. This method, called
"banded digital waveguides", allows for efficient simulation of vibrations
of solid objects as well as of waves in more then one dimension. I'll
explain the basic idea and the history that led to the idea and I'll give
three examples of musical instruments that we have simulated: the
vibraphone bar and bowed interaction, Indian tabla drums, and the glass
harmonica (that is, one or more wine glasses).
I'll conclude by comparing this approach with alternative simulation methods.
